We couldn’t be prouder to announce that Mabel Still, an assistant transport planner in our Bristol team, has been shortlisted for CIHT South West’s Peter Swain ‘Emerging Professional of the Year’ Award.

To be honest, this news comes as no surprise to us. We’ve been exposed to Mabel’s brilliance for a little while now. She joined Rappor’s graduate intake back in 2024, fresh from completing a Masters in Transport Planning and Engineering at the University of West England (UWE) Bristol.

At that time, Mabel was already, and continues to be, involved with UWE’s ‘Centre for Transport & Society’ as a research assistant working on its “Last Mile E-Cargo Deliveries” project.

In support of her entry, Glenn Lyonn, Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility, said:

“I have known Mabel since her time as an enthusiastic, intellectually curious, and engaging student on our master’s course in 2023/24, where she earned a distinction. As someone who strongly supports CIHT’s focus on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), I have been inspired by Mabel’s choice (in both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations) to focus on understanding and addressing gender inequalities in transport.”

Mabel’s ongoing voluntary role with the Women in Transport has established her as a visible and vocal advocate for women’s safety across all modes by gathering insights from across the public and private sectors to identify and propose industry solutions.

She also supports the Bristol BID delivery team with its Green Infrastructure Strategy, developing an approach for student engagement based on practical, first-hand experience.

Finally, Mabel also lends a pair of hands to the Bristol Cycling Campaign organising community events and managing its social media platforms.

All this achieved alongside her full-time role at Rappor, where she’s heavily involved in projects ranging from new sports and community facilities for the Bristol Robin’s Foundation, to developing active travel strategies for new settlements. She also leads our internal “Research at Rappor” initiative, encouraging, empowering and coordinating the research efforts of our emerging professionals to find innovative solutions across our engineering and environmental disciplines.

The CIHT South West Awards celebrate the very best the region offers across the key areas of highways and transportation. Open to everyone, they recognise the outstanding contribution that good projects and people make to our daily lives.

Reflecting on the news, Mabel added:

“Being nominated for this award was such an honour in the first place but finding out I’ve been shortlisted is the cherry on top of the cake! I really appreciate the recognition, and honestly, I’m just super grateful to have such a supportive team here at Rappor. I look forward to the awards night where we can celebrate the nomination together!”

Winners will be announced at the CIHT South West Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday 21 May, at the RAMM in Exeter.

All that’s left to say is good luck. We’re all rooting for you, Mabel!
