Graduate placements are always important to us here at Rappor. They offer the chance to give a valuable glimpse into a diverse industry which otherwise may not get seen.

Placements can be hard for students to find so this year – albeit a very different year, we were determined to offer the best experience we could to this years’ graduate placement student, Simon Howes.

We asked Simon how he has found his placement so far and his time with us here at Rappor.

“I am a 3rd year Geography student, studying at the University of Gloucestershire and as part of my studies at University I chose to partake in a placement module which allowed me to undertake a 10-week placement with Rappor throughout the 2021 academic year.

Although as of the current time we are in, I have been unable to work and interact personally with Rappor I have been remotely working on a number of different workflows within a single project focused on affordable housing outside of Newbury. Including Transport Statements and Travel Plans. These different workflows allowed me to see the different style of work requirement as a transport planner compared to my University work alongside of this, and I have gained valuable experience.

From this placement I hope to develop my understanding and insight of transport planning as a future career path. Firstly, as I find the role I am in at Rappor becoming more and more interesting as I continue my work and secondly that access to planning opportunities have been rare within my course of study.”

With the transport planning industry facing a serious skill shortage we’re glad to have helped possibly bring another young Transport Planner to the table and we’ll continue to offer placements as often as we can.

Thanks for being with us here at Rappor Simon!
